Prior Approval for larger home extensions
In England, certain larger single-storey rear extensions can be built under the Prior Approval (neighbour consultation) scheme rather than via a full planning application.
Typical eligibility (England)
- Single-storey rear extension within set depth, height and eaves limits
- Detached, semi-detached or terraced houses (not flats or maisonettes)
- Not on designated land or covered by an Article 4 Direction removing the right
- Property has not already exceeded permitted extension limits
Wales
Wales does not currently operate the same Prior Approval scheme for larger rear extensions. Welsh users should use the free check to see their correct route.
